1980年代，由于MTV台的堀起，利用影像结合音乐的新趋势营销，让一些色艺双全的新生代歌手，有了绝佳的表演新舞台，在80年代后期开始由Tiffany、Debbie Gibson 揭开Teen偶像歌手爆红的滥觞，到后期的Tommy Page等，为这一波青少年偶像狂潮惊艳全球乐坛做了最精采的诠释。其中，拥有古巴血统的音乐才女玛蒂卡Martika更是其中最受人瞩目的一位新巨星。
这位年仅19岁的年轻女孩在1988年以一首轻快的电子舞曲“More Then You Know”平地一声雷空降全美排行榜，随即以反毒广告单曲“Toy soldiers”冲上冠军宝座并蝉连2周冠军。
